Obama Doesn’t Need to be Diverse? Not According to Some
I know that many believe that racism is a one-sided game that only whites can lose, but i didn’t know that equality was as well. But with the historic election of the first black president in this country, some prominent African-Americans are saying President-elect Barack Obama does not need to do as much as previous (white) presidents to diversify his cabinet.
“He will assemble a cabinet that I think reflects a modern-day array of talent,” said Rep. Artur Davis, Alabama Democrat and long-time Obama supporter. “I don’t think he has any special obligation to play the quota game to have so many blacks and so many whites.”
And why would that be? Because he’s black? Basically, he’s saying, ‘choose the most qualified person.’ I’ve always thought Affirmative Action was a joke that is discriminatory in its own right by punishing white males who have no control over past injustices. It’s very biblical in a way: ‘punish the son for the sins of the father.’ Apparently, Mr. Davis feels the same… at least when it comes to Barack Obama’s presidency.
Had John McCain won, Artur Davis probably wouldn’t feel the same way. He would want a Rainbow Cabinet of blacks and hispanics to showcase America’s diversity. But Obama can choose the right qualifications over the right color or gender, a luxury many companies and pro sports franchises wish they had.
Why should Obama get a pass just because of his color? This is where that foul theory of ‘reverse racism’ comes into play. Because he’s black, he doesn’t have to try so hard to promote diversity? It’s the White Man’s Burden? If we’re going to play by any set of rules then everyone needs to play by them not just White Men.
