Bettors Like Obama on the 4th
Damn, son! John McCain must be feeling a little bit like James “Buster” Douglas right now. Futures traders and sports books are banking heavily on a win for Democratic candidate Barack Obama.
Ladbrokes, a massive online sports book based in the United Kingdom, have the odds of an Obama victory at 1-10 while John McCain’s hopes of winning are set at 11-2. Ouch!
Now these aren’t quite as insurmountable odds as Douglas vs. Tyson but it is pretty staggering. However, one thing that always remains constant is the chance of an upset, for, as we know, bettors are not always right. In the New Hampshire primary Obama himself was a 1-33 shot to win before he lost to Hillary Clinton. James Douglas was a 42-1 underdog before he scored one of the most dramatic upsets in the history of boxing, knocking Mike Tyson out cold to capture the heavyweight title in 1990. Will something similar happen next week? Will the diminutive underdog manage to upset his formidable opponent? Will David take Goiath down? Probably not.
