Seattle Seahawks- Regular Season Week 2
The disaster continues. Perhaps Week 2 is a little early for all hope to be lost but things aren’t going to get any easier on the Hawks.
This week we saw more inefficiency from the airial attack, whose depleted receiver core took yet another hit (two, actually) yesterday. But on the flip side the 49ers pass attack, led by journeyman, J.T. O’Sullivan, was able to find holes in the Seattle defense and connect on some big plays.
Right now it’s starting to become silly. With a dearth of healthy bodies and, to be honest, talent at Wide Receiver, Matt Hasselbeck’s numbers are dropping like a Lead Zepplin. Following this week’s abysmal performance, 18 of 36 (%50) for 189 yards (10.5 per comp.) and 2 INTs his QB rating for the season now stands at a sallow 48.6 after two games. With so many players out at the receiver position, Coach Mike Holmgren looked to backup QB Seneca Wallace to try and fill some void with his talents. And as if the position itself were cursed, he left the field after suffering a strained calf muscle during pregame warmups. Later in the game, 2nd year man Logan Payne went down with a torn knee ligament after reeling in a catch from Hasselbeck.
The only bright spot for the offense was Julius Jones who racked up 127 yards on 26 carries (4.8 per carry) and 1 touchdown in his Qwest Field debut. On the opposite side of the ball, the Hawks managed to successfully limit San Francisco running back, Frank Gore to 61 yards on 19 carries (3.2 per).
But J.T. O’Sullivan was able find receivers in the Seattle secondary as he totaled 321 yards on 20 of 32 passing (%62.5 and 16 yards per) with 1 touchdown.
Whatever needs to be fixed had better get done fast if possible. The Seahawks will face another division rival in the St. Louis Rams next week and the defending champion Giants following their bye week. Hopefully by that time in Week 5, they will have Engram and Branch back from injuries and the passing game will be headed back in the right direction. And that auspicious day can’t come too soon, what with the teams lack of execution and seemingly unending rash of injuries, who knows what state they’ll be in by then.
Seahawks (0-2-0), 49ers (1-1-0)
