Is John McCain the Only One Who Wants to stay in Iraq?
So, I think John McCain has crapped his pants. The reason for his incontinence: the Iraqi Foreign Minister announced today that any security deal with the United States must contain “a very clear timeline” for the withdrawal of U.S. troops. So where will McCain stand now? He’s been adamantly opposed to a timetable all along but recently relented a little when Iraqi leaders agreed with Senator Barack Obama’s plan for a scheduled withdrawal, so I ask which side of the fence will he be on now?
Having chastised Barack Obama the last few months over the senator’s foreign policy, most notably his plan for the Iraq war, McCain conceded a little a few weeks ago when Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki endorsed Obama’s 16 month plan for withdrawal. After the show of support, McCain said “It’s a pretty good timetable.” But he also noted that a withdrawal should still be based on conditions on the ground.
So what now? Will McCain support the Iraqi’s plan to set a timetable? He certainly is in a precarious situation. On the one hand he can endorse the plan as well and gain some support but then he’d be rescinding the stance he’s taken from day one. On the other hand, he can go forth with his “wait and see” approach that has hitherto been steadfast. But then he’d be suggesting we take part in an unwanted occupation of a country striving for sovereignty. I dare say he’s between Iraq and a hard place.
