What Unity Means to Hillary

Published by thelastmaninamerica at 9:24 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Unity- oneness; the state or condition of being one.  Since “suspending” her campaign on June 7th Hillary Clinton has preached, along with Barack Obama, the idea of unity for the Democratic Party. However, that was after she dragged out the primaries well past the point of her mathematical elimination, refusing to give in and exhausting the masses along with her finances and those of her supporters. And as her campaign went on an indefinite hiatus, apparently her criticisms of Sen. Obama and his plans for the future of America went on break too, as she promised to do “whatever” he asked her to do. Since then she made good, supporting Obama in his pursuit of the White House. That is until now, three weeks prior to the Democratic National Convention, as the finality of her losing her bid for the presidency draws ever closer. Now she is insisting that the voices of her supporters, all 18 million, be heard before they can move on in full support of Senator Obama and march to victory in November. But is that what she really wants? Are we to believe she isn’t grasping at straws in hopes that she can still pull the nomination of her hat? After all, what good can rehashing a battle that ended two months ago do? Surely, reopening the wounds and stirring up the bitter feelings can only drive another wedge between the two camps and widen the void. And with the election approaching, can the Democratic Party really stand to be divided if they wish to beat John McCain?

In a joint statement issued by the respective senators’ camps, they say they are “working together to make sure the fall campaign and the convention are a success.” That is a far cry from where they were just a few months ago when they fought like two lions over the same female in estrus. No holds were barred at the time and the two fought bitterly, attacking each other’s character, perhaps more than each other’s policies. But in the end, Barack Obama emerged victorious and Senator Clinton was left with no other option but to call her campaign off and admit defeat. However, she found another alternative as she merely “suspended” her campaign, effectively hanging on to the delegates that pledged their support for her.

But like some Grandmaster of chess, it appears Sen. Clinton has weaseled her way inside her opponent’s defenses and may be preparing to strike. Having never officially dropped out, it looks like she may be rallying the troops for one last push to take down  Fort Obama. “I happen to believe we will come out stronger if people feel that their voices were heard and their views were respected,” she said, adding that it could provide some sort of “catharsis” for her supporters before they can fully get behind Barack Obama. But what good can 18 million people rallying in against the presumptive nominee, in suppport of an essential lost cause, due to strengthen the foundation of the party? Though she says it “will not happen,” I believe she intends for the show of support for her to sway things back her way at the last moment and land a surprise nomination. Remember that not too long ago, she was a lock for the nomination until Obama began an epic winning streak and bever looked back. I’m sure her supporters, especially those who donated vast sums of money, harbor bitterness though it probably can’t hold a candel to that festering inside of Hillary. Imagine if she could flip it all around now! What a dagger that would be to the upstart senator from Illinois!

She has never been willing to admit defeat and though she feigns support for Obama, this call-to-arms shows who she really is and what the Democratic Party and essentially all of politics has become, infighting and polorization. If she really inteded for there to be unity she would’ve conceeded when the math was first against or, at the very latest, June 7th, when she knew it was really over but couldn’t swallow her pride and admit it. In a way it reminds me of the situation with Brett Favre; she is afraid to call it quits for fear that she might get another shot at it. Tenacity is admirable in all walks of life but we aren’t talking about a quarterback and the future of a football team, we’re talking about a race for president and the future of a country. And at this point, a little humility would do a lot more for the greater good. If the Democratic Party can at least agree that their biggest enemy is John McCain, then maybe they can they settle on that old addage and accept that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” If so, then perhaps they can put this childishness behind them and actually move on, in unity.
